Mustafa

10 May 2025

Dunya, the title of Mustafa’s masterfully crafted and breathtakingly tender debut album, roughly translates in Arabic to “the world with all its flaws.” It’s a lofty subject for a young songwriter, but as with all the themes at the heart of the Sudanese-Canadian artist’s work—from religious devotion to childhood trauma, gang violence to romantic intimacy—he approaches it through a personal lens. Blending genres and moods, weaving romantic details into instantly memorable folk songs, he’s created an album that feels like a series of personal revelations, one after the other.

Book

With a hushed voice that can silence those around him, Mustafa has quickly gone from child prodigy reciting poetry in his hometown of Toronto to a songwriter behind great pop songs. On Dunya, he becomes a writer in his own right. Featuring guest appearances from collaborators such as Aaron Dessner, Rosalía, Clairo, Nicolas Jaar and more, as well as Mustafa’s longtime creative partner Simon Hessmann, the music reveals a confident and distinctive voice that has never seemed more ready to speak to the masses.
He will be back on May 10, 2025 in Paris, for an exceptional concert at the Cirque d’Hiver!
